Can someone tell me which is a good place to take a CPR class, and maybe, general first aid tips? What are the costs? I checked Red Cross, but they only offer online classes. I am not interested in any certifications; just need to know what to do if an emergency situation arises.

Thanks,
K

If you don't want to be certified, which I don't recommend because you cannot be certain you understand how to properly perform the requisite actions, then just use YouTube and/or an internet search.

They will want you to get certified so if you are against that it isn't a good option, but I believe many of the parks and rec or adult ed offerings around here have CPR/First Aid classes I took my through Fairfax County Parks and Rec.

It's probably not as cost effective, but you can also try any of the scuba diving shops around, as CPR certification is a requirement for Rescue Diver certification. Some of the shops will do CPR as stand alone class and some might only bundle it with Rescue Diver...they will at least be able to direct you to another place to take it.

They actually recommend "hands only" CPR now for people without medical training (ie your average person). You basically place your palm a little above the bottom of their sternum, place your other hand on top, and do compressions at a rate of 100 per minute (checkout youtube for proper hand placement). No breaths are given.

If you are interested in standard CPR (involving rescue breaths) and the special cases of infants/kids any hospital or ambulance center will offer classes.

The American Heart Association is a great resource especially if you just want to learn something and don't want the actual certification:
