We finally have a contract on our house and are in a hurry to find a home in the Winchester area. We stopped looking altogether in the summer. We have 3 children ages 13-girl, 11-boy and 3-boy......anyways, I am overwhelmed with info on the local schools etc.....what do you guys recommend? We have been working with a realtor and coming next wk to look again..but I am so stressed to find just the right house, location, schools etc. Any help and guidance would be appreciated. Where to avoid? Concerns with environmental issues, crime etc. Thanks!

I haven't been here long enough to get a 100% idea on schools but it would help to get a better idea of what you're looking for as far as a house is concerned, do you want to live IN Winchester or a small town or more rural, etc....

Hello and thank you for responding. I am under a lot of stress from my husband to pick a house FAST. We are settling the end of January on ours. Anyways, the bottom line for me is that I want to be in a great school district, in a safe area-low crime, with a great location. We like a rural area but not like Stephen's City. To me, it is too rural there with not much around. I like Winchester because it is rural with everything you need close by. However, I am not convinced I want to live in the City either. From what I can tell, it had some beautiful areas...but I am not sure on the schools or the type of community it is. I would prefer a home that had a bit of land. We looked North of James Wood HS and I really liked that area and hear the schools are great......but not a lot of homes available there. Any new homes going up there? We aren't going to be there forever, so would need an area with a good re-sale value.......but who knows what that is with the market. I know I am asking for the world here, but it is such a big decision for us. Thanks!

I'd try to get as close to your job(s) as possible. Commuting is a huge headache. There are no really bad neighborhoods or schools near Winchester, as far as I know.

well my husband will be commuting to Leesburg. I am a Nurse and not sure where I will work yet. I guess I need to figure out where will live first. I need something flexible because of the kids. But I want to get them settled first.

Default Lake Holiday

You may want to check out Lake Holiday. Gated Community about 11 miles out of Winchester. I used to sell home there for a builder. If you would like more info email me.

You might want to look into Berryville.
It's only a 10-15 min. drive to Winchester and slightly closer to Leesburg for your husband's commute. The schools are pretty good.
it's a nice small town.

I would say Berryville.

At least Berryville is in a county, unlike Winchester.

berryville. still country but close to both Leesburg and winchester.

If you want a bit more of a "town" look at Purceville, more grown up than Berryville (amienties etc...) about 10miles out of Leesburg.

Took the words right out of my mouth.... Beautiful gated community. My wife and I love it but she doesn't want to commute to Front Royal from there every day.....
