I have lived a lot of different places and Fairfax is the only school that lets out two hours early on Monday.

My hometown has a half day every Friday. It's idiotic.

I'm pretty sure I would be in favor of doing away with early release Mondays (the student day is longer than a half day), but I doubt the meetings that happen during that time would cease and I don't know to what other time they would be moved.

I still have two kids in ES, the third in MS. I will stick up for the FCPS teachers in the two ES my kids go to. My career enables me to parent volunteer 1 hour/month in the schools for the last 4 years. I can tell you first hand there is not a lot of free time during the day for anyone in the school. Arrival duty, hall duty, lunch duty, special events duty, extra-curricular activities, dismissal duty, extra tutoring, and lastly parental communications.

At the beginning, I could not understand the half-days on Mon for ES but now I don't have a problem with it. It also provides flexibility for the parents to schedule medical and dental appts so kids don't have to miss class. Teaching techniques have evolved greatly along with the numerous data calls and performance studies and audits that are required by federal, state, local govs and private orgs that provide funding and grants to schools. Department heads need to regularly meet with staff as well. Teachers also have to be monitored, critiqued and evaluated.

FCPS are top notched in the country for many reasons. I will cut them some slack on this.
