LOL Nerf. I for one just bought my first home and never needed to be able to do any more than clear my cars before. Now I have been sheepishly clearing my walk/drive with a car sized shovel because I didn't want to be "that person" at Lowe's this past weekend

People around here are incredibly paranoid when it comes to weather. Perhaps because nobody knows how to drive in the snow. Not to mention all the overbearing helicopter parents that are whining that such and such district hasn't closed yet.

Honestly, I'm surprised they closed so early.

I honestly don't know why they closed today. By the time I woke up everything was starting to melt. You would think that bus drivers would be able to drive in some weather, but I've seen many that likely aren't from this country, so they probably don't have the experience.

That and in some areas, it wasn't melted enough. People have to remember that Fairfax County is pretty big and covers a lot of area. There could be melting streets in one end of the county and still be a solid sheet of ice in the other. I remember last year when they didn't cancel and cars, buses, trucks, no one could get though the neighborhood up the main road to the school. Walkers were trying to climb up the hill and falling down. Luckily, there was an alternate way to get to the school, but even that was pretty slick. But co-workers told me their neighborhoods were all clear, no problems.

The problem is, as jillabean states, there are parts of the county that can be extremely hazardous (ie. Clifton and Great Falls), while your neighborhood may be fine. It would be impossible to run the buses to some neighborhoods and not to others.

I drive a bus and I'll never forget the winter of '03-'04. It was a morning just like this morning....wet roads and slightly above freezing. They ordered a normal opening and 1200 buses started rolling. Almost immediately, the temps dropped a degree or two and the roads started icing. Almost 40 bus accidents occurred in the next 30 minutes, thankfully none involving injuries to the kids.

A buddy of mine was rounding a bend and starting down that big hill on Chapel Rd in Clifton and a woman was spun-out, sideways across the road in her Mercedes. He tried to brake but the bus started sliding. He was afraid he'd kill her if he broadsided her, so he deliberately steered it into the guard rail to slow or stop the bus....it worked, he just nudged her in the left rear quarter panel and slowly spun her a little bit. He even knocked a tree down along the way. No injuries, but the kids loved it...they said it was more fun than King's Dominion!

Anyway, the shot-callers remember that morning too, and I'm sure it still affects their decisions. I sure wouldn't want that responsibility. People are going to second guess...no matter what you do.
