I'm currently working in a position that only requires a public trust. However, I do have a TS/SCI that will expire in October if it isn't activated again (five year mark). I recently received an offer from a company with a contractor position on Bolling AFB. They would sponsor my five year update in October were I to take the offer. Some variables: I don't hate my current job right now (not a lot of stress but not very challenging or interesting either), I make some decent bucks (the new job would be a 10% decrease in salary), my current job is two blocks away from a major metro stop, and I work across the street from my spouse. However, I think the new job might be more exciting content-wise.

I'm just wondering if anyone else out there has faced this situation and were their any regrets about saying goodbye to the TS/SCI or other clearance?

I think it comes down to a few factors:

1.) How long will your current job last? As long as you want, or a contract that can disappear down the road a bit?

2.) How old are you/what stage are you at in your career? Are you approaching retirement, or is that something that is decades away?

Your current job sounds really convenient, so I guess it also depends on how much of your life is your work.

To answer both of your questions: I'm 40 and a retired USAF E-7 (20 years, 8 days in, but who's counting?). I am a contractor now where I'm working as a business analyst in software development. I feel like I'm "faking" my job a bit since I don't have a strong IT background, but I've found my critical thinking skills and communications skills have served me very well in my current capacity, and I think my work ethic is very much appreciated. I think with enough work and hard effort I can eventually land a govie job with my customer. However, I just want to put in my 40 hours a week and go home to my family every night (work smarter, not harder as the saying goes). The days of overachieving and spending 11 hours a day at work just to impress the boss are over for me.

The job that would use my clearance is at DIA which is a bit scary as the few people I know there are miserable. However, the position is a good one, and it will use my creativity and give me some autonomy I hope.

I know that isn't too much in the way of concrete information, and ultimately I don't think there is a "wrong" choice (I'm happy to just have a job and be able to support my family - wife and a 4 year old). I think I'm just looking for other people's thoughts/opinions/personal experiences.

Stay put, if ever needed again im sure someone will foot the bill for you, with military background you should be fine. As someone with a small child that passes up better opportunities to stay closer to home my family is my number one when my children are older I get those more exciting jobs!
