If you're looking for ice melt and don't mind spending a little more than usual, stores like PetSmart have animal friendly versions. They don't usually sell out of it, since people don't think to look there.

Funny you mention it. The last snow storm we had, I found myself in the Springfield PetSmart, not for that product, but for some other pet products. The person in front on me was buying some pet-friendly de-icer and the clerk actually took a call while I was waiting from someone asking me if they had any more. Apparently, the person in front of me bought the last one they had. I have no idea if it is a regular thing for them to sell out, but at least one location did a few weeks ago.

PetSmart was out of animal friendly ice melt the last time I was there about a week or two ago. Based on reports on the news about how all the NoVA communities had spent more on de-icing roads, etc., than they had budgeted, I think PetSmart probably is running into the same problem -- of more demand than they anticipated this winter, a big problem since so much of the country is having a rough winter.

I use the pet-safe stuff in the backyard because of the dogs. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as well as the other types; but, it doesn't hurt their paws.

Yeah, what happens if a snow make-up day is a snow day?

I don't think that has ever happened during my tenure with FCPS...

Two negatives make a positive, right? It counts!

I honestly don't know.

Holy cow, even the animal friendly ice melt is gone? Time to start putting out the pickle juice, I guess.

How about kitty litter? Have the hordes depleted the supply of that too?

I use kitty litter (the old fashioned cheapo type) because salt/chemicals damages concrete over time.
