Would the VRE be the best choice in this scenario?
YES!

Changing Metro lines during rush hour is a pain in the rump.

You can take VRE to L'Enfant plaza and then take either the green or yellow line up to Chinatown. You won't wait more than a couple minutes for a metro train during rush hour. There are 3 metro lines that go into Chinatown so that gives you a lot of options. I would recommend the OmniRide over VRE since it's a little more consistently on time, but VRE is fine if you are near a station. Keep a schedule of the bus schedule even if you utilize VRE since there will be occasions when VRE gets delayed an hour or two due to some incident. Also look at the slug lines.

I'd go VRE to Springfield and then Metro to Chinatown. It drops you off right in the front of Chinatown. Not a bad ride, my wife did it from Spotylvania fro a long time.

I'd say the better school systems are in Fairfax County VA (FxCo) and Montgomery County MD (MoCo), both with higher home values and property taxes (you get what you pay for). But in this market, you can find some good prices. You have MARC train in MD that takes you downtown from the I-270 corridor, or metro also along that corridor. Not a bad ride. If you are planning to take MARC you may want to consider Frederick County MD also - their school system is also good, and property taxes are lower: Point of Rocks and Brunswick are very nice. They have quite a few very nice homes in that area. This would add about 20 minutes to your commute from MoCo and FxCo. I know quite a few people who do the commute, it's do-able.

Best of luck!
