Hello All,

I will have to commute from Gainesville to Alexandria 3 days a week (Mount Vernon region) ,for my job. Looks like I will be able to choose my preferred days and timings. Any suggestions about the best commute route and commute time?

I do 4am on I 66 and have zero issues. You can get on 66 by 5 and still be good but much later and you'll regret it. Waiting until 9am or later will be necessary and you'll still have some traffic.

Thanks Bigfoot424. Any feedback/inputs ..Due to my current circumstances the earliest I can start will be 7 AM. I am losing my sleep nowadays thinking about the commute and it is making me deeply nervous as this is something new for me How it will be if I take a time between 7 am and 9 in the morning? I am just trying to figure out the best options so that I can save time .

Even in non-rush hour traffic, that commute will be a haul. You definitely want to leave as early as possible. I'd say for your first time making the drive, leave no later than 5am.

If you arrive at 7am, what time can you leave from work?

You could do Braddock all the way to Backlick, then Backlick all the way. That's a horrible commute.

If I reach there at 8 am I can leave by 4 pm. I heard there are people doing 10am-6pm. But no idea what time the traffic will be comparitively better.

10 will be better but 6 pm is still rough. I took my current job requiring a commute towards the beltway only because I exit at Nutley St. By arriving at 0430 I have little traffic to deal with. Those in my office arriving at 630-7 are always complaining about the traffic coming in on 66. That said, I 95 is much worse but that doesn't mean I'm singing praises for 66.

If you work 10am - 6pm, your morning commute will be horrible and your afternoon commute will be tolerable.

In my experience, traffic is the heaviest between 7:00am - 9:00/30am and 3:30pm-6:00pm. Personally, I'd rather be delayed going home than coming to work - I really hate to be late for work, it throws my whole day off. If it were me, I would leave at 5:00am and try a couple different routes to see which one I like best.

Heck, I would even do a test run on the weekend.

Thanks for the inputs. In google,my commute time shows 1 hr approx. Planing to do a test drive on weekend and see how it goes. It is like 3 days a week ,I have to do this long commute and the remaining 2 days it is less than 16 miles. I wish if it was other way round.!

My wife commutes from Braddock Rd on the beltway to the Mt Vernon area. She lives home about 7:15. It can take her a half hour to 45 minutes to get there. If you can get to Braddock Rd and 495 in 15 minutes, you can count on an hour commute. Plan accordingly.
