I just received my DMV auto registration renewal notice and went online to take advantage of the 3 year renewal option at DMV-VA. They said the fee would be nearly $400. Whuh? After checking the 1 year fee, I found I apparently had no choice but to pay it.

Then I recalled that my state senator (Ebbin) said that the $64 per year hybrid fee repeal bill was awaiting signature by Gov. McAuliffe. So I guess if he signs it, I will get a refund or adjustment for 3 times that.

Just wanted to warn all of you if you are in the same situation.

Well, you don't pay as much in gas as those in traditional cars, so the state isn't making as much off of you in taxes. One thing is certain, the state will find a way to regain their money.

Sorry, spencer, the legislature disagrees with you about the fairness of it, and there are plenty of other arguments that can be made to support their action. In any case, the law authorizing the fee has been repealed by both houses and the gov is expected to sign it, so the issue is moot.

The purpose of my post is not to start a debate about the fee, but instead to alert others to the fees' jumping up and that a refund will likely be processed.

Did you see it in writing that the fee would be refunded?

I wouldn't bet the ranch.

I'm not saying it's right or fair, I'm just saying the state will still get it's money. The governor may certainly sign the repeal, but you are very naive to think they will not get this money elsewhere.

Did I say anything about the state's ability to raise revenue (or reallocate it, or cut costs, etc)?

Really, I don't know what fight you're looking for but this thread isn't the place for it.

Check out the reporting in the Post and the Richmond paper. The bill repealing it calls for refunds. For example:

Hybrid cars are a lot more expensive than regular cars. So the state collects a lot more sales tax on those than regular cars at time of purchase.
