I live closer to DC (in Leesburg) and the commute is killing me. I keep getting sick and have had some major issues. I would advise living closer to DC unless you really are really young, or have an employer that lets you commute most of the week. The commute can be up to 2.5 hours (bad traffic/ storm/ waiting for connections etc.)

I feel for you, DrNewbie.

On paper, commuting long distances kinda sorta seems like it could be rationalized to be worth it for better housing, cheaper cost of living, and a marginally better quality of life for the people you love. Grueling commutes are doable for a limited period, but people just don't realize the actual cost in money and toll on their life and health. After commuting M-F from Spotsy to downtown DC for a few years to save money, by the weekend I always felt like a worm that had been stomped on.

For those that like to crunch the numbers, this article may be of some use

Keep in mind that these prices are from 2011. The cost difference today is significantly higher.

The popular blog Mr. Money Mustache also provides some perspective (also from 2011)

The True Cost of Commuting
