Springfield is definitely not far flung or exurban. But West Springfield is a tad far out, that's for sure.

And neither Springfield nor W springfield are bad areas. The latter in fact is an excellent place to live - but only for settled families with kids IMO

West Springfield is not exactly Siberia. It's a 28-minute ride from the Franconia-Springfield metro station to L'Enfant. And there are parts of West Springfield that are less than 10 minutes from the metro. That's not a bad commute by any standards. There are lots of very nice townhouses in this area and a lot of the neighborhoods are older, wooded, and very peaceful.

Thanks everyone for the responses and thoughts. We actually looked at a handful of townhouses around Burke today but overall were not incredibly impressed with the available choices in our budget range. We think we might check out the Fairlington and Shirlington areas if nothing works out in Springfield/Burke. Does anyone have any experience commuting to DC (intersection of D and 12th St) from there? It seems that some bus routes might go directly from the Fairlington / Shirlington areas to DC?

Basically. If you do a 5 day, that's $5.65 a trip, 50 cents more than the $5.15. on Metro. But on a monthly pass, it's $4.90 a trip which is a quarter cheaper. I consider that a steal since VRE service is far superior (although less frequent).

I'm not taking into consideration parking, although it is free for VRE at every station except Springfield (You could park at mall and make the 8 minute walk).

The 22A goes between Fairlington/Shirlington and the Pentagon Metro station. 15 minute bus ride in HOV lanes: https://www.wmata.com/bus/timetables/va/22a.pdf?n.

The 7A&F also go between Shirlington and Pentagon Metro station every 10 minutes for about a 10 minute bus ride. The 7Y comes about every 20 minutes for a 30 minute bus ride to downtown: http://www.wmata.com/bus/timetables/va/7a-y.pdf.
