The bus is about an hour from the Dulles parking lot to downtown. Lots of people use it and you can get work done, or read the paper or sleep-just let someone else do the driving. Not so bad...

Default Ashburn offers more than the sum of its commute

We moved to Ashburn Village in 2003 and later to Lansdowne in 2005. I work in D.C. and the wife in Springfield. Driving in together via HOV-2 on Rt. 267 is our first option, but when that is not possible I take the bus from Dulles directly to the Pentagon and or begin my commute at 6:30 am. Either way the commute is very reasonable. More importantly! Ashburn/Lansdowne and the surrounding area offers a lot of convenience and a great selection of restaurants, shopping, and other excursions for any family.

Drive the route before buying or renting, but be sure to spend some time in and around the communities when you do as to fully expose yourself to what they have to offer.

Cheers!

Both mdcrim and pro_loudoun make the point well; if you're having delusions of driving single passenger into work every day, forget it. Save your sanity. If you're willing to embrace public transportation and/or HOV-2 car or vanpooling on the Dulles Toll Road HOV lanes - then the commute is quite doable. Take your pick. For the former, the Loudoun County Commuter Bus web site is http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=785 (broken link). VRE is not an option as it does not extend in the direction of Ashburn Farm and Loudoun County; you've got the right frame of mind there, though.

If you are doing the commute your self, bring your breakfast and dinner in your car. As someone else posted, take time off and do the commute yourself. The Ashburn/Branbleton/Broadlands/Lansdowne communities have a lot of restaurants and business where pretty much you do not have to live your subdivision when you are out of work.

It's a good life.

I'm a former Ashburn Village resident, and I personally think that such a commute is way too far, regardless of whether or not you carpool. However, it depends on one's tolerance for commuting (of which I have very little). In my opinion, you can find the same things that Ashburn has closer in, for a less brutal commute.

Generally speaking, If you move closer in to the city housing prices are higher.
