Hey guys, I'm moving to NoVA, I have another house in TX, if I register my new car in TX, do I still have to pay for the property tax in VA? How do you guys cope with that? It's a very harsh tax.

They will probably prorate your payment, we just paid our taxes on October 5th. You may also try this website from the city and try giving them a call to get the facts (there's a chance I could be wrong): http://alexandriava.gov/finance/info...t.aspx?id=1926

It says there that if the car is usually parked in VA I have to register it there. But what happens if I don't?

You will most likely be ticketed and if they find out that you have lived in the city for more than 30 days (I believe) you will be forced to register your vehicle with Alexandria or fined numerous times.

I don't even know if this is still effective or if the city really looks into this stuff any more. My parents both live in Alexandria and they each have DC tags (have had them for at least 5 years) and they've never been cited and/or ticketed for parking on public streets. If you live on private property such as a driveway or your apartment/condo is privately owned it may be a problem. I live off of Van Dorn and I have many neighbors with out of state tags parking on the streets (and have for many years) they refuse to register their vehicle with Alexandria and have yet to be forced to.

It's a bigger risk if parking on public streets/roads than on private property, we have a little rule with parking enforcement (and yes some nosey neighbors have been known to call them on vehicles), if you have your vehicle parked on any public streets for longer than 72 hours (3 days) then you could be ticketed (this will definitely put them on to you) and if longer towed. My sister was ticketed for parking in front of her house (public street) for more than 3 days.

You can try your luck at it, I don't think it's a big issue. Good Luck!

I guess the smartest move is to try and if I get ticketed, I'll register. It will be parked on private property most of the time anyway. Either at home or at work.

If you are parking on private property, preferably a garage you shouldn't get ticketed. Do what you can to avoid registering your car here, that tax is a good size chunk of change. Look around, you'll see lots of out of state plates.

Just a FYI, there are private garages that are monitored (i.e., management must report to the county the cars parked there or something). I know in my condo building in Arlington, people who were renting with out-of-state license plates were reported.

Yeah, but the personal income tax you make up for with the difference in salary, besides, I live in Mexico right now, I'm used to a personal income tax.
