We are headed to Northern Virginia for a few days and would like to venture into D.C. some afternoon and evening. We will be staying in the Leesburg, VA area and are wondering what is the best way to get to and from D.C.?

Get up early, get a parking space at the Vienna station and take the Metro into downtown. Have fun!

What part of DC? If you are visiting I assume the National Mall? You have a few options:

Metro
Take Route 7 towards Tysons Corner and take the I-66 exit. Stay to the right (don't merge to the highway) and you'll find the West Falls Church metro station. Here, you just take the Orange line all the way to the Smithsonian station and that gets you right to the middle of the National Mall.

Drive
Take Route 7 towards Tysons Corner and take the I-66 exit, stay on I-66 and it'll turn into Constitution Avenue as soon as you cross the bridge into DC. Just keep going on Constitution and you'll soon be driving by the White House and Washington Memorial. There are tons of parking lots in the area (prices range from $11 to $26 / day on a weekend) or maybe you'll be lucky and find free parking on the street.

I would take the metro though if you're going on a weekday. On a weekend, I would drive there.

Though I've never traveled in from Leesburg, it seems the West/East Falls Church stations are a bit closer in and perhaps more direct if taking 7/267, not as much parking though. I usually take 66 from Fairfax to Ballston and park at my work garage and hop on the Metro there.

If you're gonna be around this weekend, there is a brewfestival going on in Leesburg (not to mention the many wineries and scenic areas/rivers around), you may not even need to go to DC!

Haha but if you do, the Nats are playing the Braves and I believe Saturday is a night game if that interests you.

If you are going during the week, you old take the Loudoun Commuter bus in. They pick up off Sycolin Rd in Leesburg. If there are a lot of you, it may be cost prohibitive. It is $7 or $8 per person each way.
