My commute in AZ is 50 miles and it takes me about 1 hour 15 minutes each way. Phoenix does have amazing infrastructure so the road are creme de la creme! I am actually tentative about moving only because of the temporary decrease in the level I am accustomed to living here In AZ. I have 55OO sq ft home that was purchased in the $400k's and a gigantic lagoon pool with plenty of other amenities. Don't suppose the places there be what I am accustomed to here.
I would never leave if I had perfect roads, a huge house, and a lagoon pool for that price. What is this area offering you?

From Middleburg to upper NW, it takes be about 1.5 hours (give or take). But that is me being out of the house no later than 6 am and utilizing the Toll Road and (often, but not always) the Greenway. Long and expensive, but, generally, not a lot of stop and go.

Only doable way is VRE from Bristow to Union Station.

I think your best option is to drive to the Broad Run Aiport VRE Station and take that to Union Station which is right on Capitol Hill. Much easier then going to Vienna and switching trains. It would be about a 1 hr 40 min commute, but at least you could sleep and read on the train.

You forgot about the part where you have to walk 10 minutes to the station platform in the middle of Feburary when it's -5 degrees out, and there's no parking, then once you leave it takes about 10-15 of traffic to get onto 28 or 234.

My wife maybe getting a job at George Washington University. She will likely work odd hours (2pm-10pm). What would her commute look like driving? Should she look into other options like VRE or the Vienna metro?

That wouldn't be bad at all either way at those times, unless construction is being done on I-66. Probably a 45 minute drive or drive plus metro if parking's an issue at GW. Orange line stops right under GW.
