Default Need info on Living in Alexandria, Duke Street

Hello all, I'm getting a job at Fort Belvoir soon and am moving to Alexandria. As I had to do this pretty quickly I've already gotten an apartment, even though I've only seen the area once. (when I was looking at the apartment) I'm moving to Foxchase off of Duke Street and North Jordan, close to I guess the Landmark area. Is that an ok Area? (I'm from Northern NJ so I know BAD areas) Also, as a single young guy, is that area good for getting to Old Town nightlife? Any info on the area (traffic, good apartment complexs if the one I have now turns to be bad) would be helpful.

I don't know any specifics about the Foxchase complex except that it's VERY convenient to Old Town -- just drive straight down Duke street and you're there in ten minutes or so, unless it's Friday night at rush hour in which case you'll find a backup of people heading onto the Beltway at Telegraph.

I'll echo what Yankeesfan said about the traffic and the access to Alexandria nightlife. If you're near Duke Street, you're good on getting to Alexandria in a reasonably timely manner.

I'm only vaguely familiar with Foxchase, but I've never heard anything bad about the Landmark area in terms of crime. There are tons of apartment complexes out that way, so if this one happens not to work out, you should have many, many more to pick from. Good luck.

The nightlife in Old Town is better for the slightly older set (mid-20's to 30's). If you are in your early twenties you will want to head up to D.C. for better places.

I knew someone (single 20-something woman) who lived in Foxchase for a couple of years. She liked it, and eventually bought a condo that's also in Landmark. Foxchase is definitely a decent apartment complex. I remember walking to my car there at 2 in the morning and having no issues with safety.

Funny thing about Landmark: I've "heard" from a couple people that it's "ghetto", but every time I've been there, it's been fine. No muggers, gangbangers, etc. I've known a few people who lived in the Landmark area and none of them had safety issues.

It is good for getting to Old Town, either by car, bus, or cab, just a straight shot down Duke Street. There's also a decent bar across Duke St. from Foxchase, called Mango Mike's. I'd agree with the poster above that Old Town is more of an older scene though.

foxchase is a good area. anybody who says it's ghetto probably grew up in SD or ND and knows nothing about high-crime areas. for the record i'm from Southeast VA i know a lil about crime. I've lived in the Landmark area for 2 yrs and crime is not one of my worries.
