Most young people NOVA, rent rooms in group houses for a few years to save money and hopefully meet someone to settle down with. NOVA/DC is 4 or 5th most expensive housing markets in the USA. Welcome. Are you cute?

But yes, it's expensive here. It was closer to normal just over 10 years ago, and then housing prices went through the roof. Hopefully you can make (or have made) this part of your salary negotiations.

From a woman's perspective:

No woman would ever think of giving herself such a descriptive user name unless she thought it was accurate. So, if you ask "MsSexCNurse" if she is "cute" or not, the answer will always be "yes".

It may not be true, but her answer will be "yes".

Yes it is. Not only is it expensive, but it's not worth it. Nothing about the area of NOVA and DC justifies that price they ask. I found a nice, cozy 1-bedroom in Falls Church for 1,100. It is possible, but you have to dig a bit. You should be able to find lots of other 1-bedrooms in the 1200 range, but you're not going to find one this low in the downtown area. Not all jobs pay more, btw.

I hope you like the area. I left Falls Church a few months ago for California, and couldn't be more relieved.

Exactly! The answer that she would give would be obvious based on the screen name wouldn't you think?

Simple supply (of jobs) and demand (for housing) compared to many other regions. Presuming that you now enjoy the "perfect" weather along coastal California or the Bay Area/Silicon Valley, you may think that is worth their own premium rents...but the overall job market IMO isn't as favorable.

I moved back here from Louisville in 2012. I live in a 500+ sq ft condo and pay $1100 for rent when in Louisville I paid $430 for the same size place. However, Louisville had nothing even approaching the level of NoVA of a social life. Plus my job was leaving Louisville and finding one there that paid even respectable wages for a black college graduate wasn't gonna happen. I had a guaranteed job here with my old company and plus I'm going to grad school to improve my connections/resume so the higher rent was worth it to get the hell out of Kentucky.

I found my relatively cheap place by being willing to take a risk in a dicier area of NoVA (Columbia Pike west of Glebe Rd). So far, a pretty good decision, I'm even thinking about buying a condo in my building to take advantage of the impending streetcar.
