What I discovered in my own exploration is that there are a lot of churches in this area (and across the country, for that matter) that identify themselves as Christian yet make little mention of Jesus Christ. The mention of God seems pedestrian sometimes, almost an afterthought. The services sometimes come across as an amalgam of psychology and theology, with a lot of emphasis on personal growth, staying safe, being well, etc. Outreach tends to focus on the low-hanging fruit like food drives, planting trees at senior centers, etc.

That said, my experience with religion has been heavy on doctrine and heavy on contributing to the greater community. Perhaps I have not evolved with the times. I am just happy people are going to church altogether but hope that the message they take away isn't overly focused on oneself...

Thanks Mnseca for your thoughtful recommendation! A friend happened to talk about this church. We're going there today.
