I'm contemplating buying a house in Nauck near Fort Barnard Park but a lot of my friends/family advise me to not buy in that area due to safety and resale reasons. The area seemed ok when I visited but I'm interested in anyone's experience of living in the Nauck area (especially near Walter Reed Drive). Thanks!

Alexandria, technically. Right next to Shirlington.

Sorry I should've clarified it's in South Arlington, above Shirlington. I didn't see a Southern Arlington board and so hoped people on this one might still know of the area.

The trolley used to run to Nauck in the old days, but Nauck itself is actually much older than that. The Post did a neighborhood profile about a year ago...

Nope, its my fault. I've lived here 30 years, and have just never heard it referred to as Nauck. Learn something new everyday.

It's also referred to as (less often) as Green Valley. It's in a great location as far as proximity to things, but it's kind of ugly--clapboard houses, no trees, chain-link fences.

Hello,

That neighborhood is gentrifying. That street is great. It's on the edge of Nauck, has a dog park at the end, and a playground on that block. There's also bus stops on that street. I think it's a great buy.

I know the exact house you are referring to I think...it's been sitting vacant a while

Most of the area is fine, though there are a handful of rental apartments I wouldn't rent in. There's much less crime than areas of Arlington such as western Columbia Pike and south of Ballston. The area is definitely gentrifying as a quite a bit of the housing stock is old and in poor condition so it's being replaced with much nicer homes; which makes sense since the land itself can go for $300-500k alone making anything but a large home a non-viable investment.
