Hi. Wondering what the best route is for a non-hov vehicle and how long it would take to get from the northern part of vienna (think hunter mill, shouse, wolf trap, around there...) to downtown dc - let's say the washington monument.

I would guess dulles toll road if necessary to route 7 east to 50 east. Or maybe even dulles toll rd to 495 to gw parkway south? Are there better routes? quickest commute comes before shorter distance

Are you against using metro? With metro its not hard at all from that neighborhood.

It's about 40 to 50 minutes using a bus to rail from that neighborhood if you are near the 432. A lot of people from that neighborhood own bikes also, and they bike down old courthouse or use the trail that connects to Springhill Metro, that will cut 10 minutes from your commute for not having to bus transfer. You can also drive to the wide open McLean Station commuter lot (takes about 15 minutes to drive there from your neighborhood in normal rush hour) and then train in.

Otherwise, You'll be doing 123 to GW and across to constitution. At rush hour, I'd put aside about an hour if you had to be there at a certain time. Otherwise, most of the time it takes about 40 minutes unless you wake up really early.

For reference, from Springhill to Smithsonian is right around 35 minutes, from McLean you cut out about 5 minutes.

If you were near Hunter Mill, you might want to take Sunrise Valley over to the Wiehle/Reston Metro station, which has parking. If you're closer to Shouse/Wolf Trap, you wouldn't want to drive that far west to then turn around and head east by Metro, but you could drive to the smaller McLean Metro lot, as TE mentioned.

At rush hour, it can take around an hour and sometimes more to get downtown from that area by car alone. I'm not crazy about the car route you proposed because it puts you on Route 7 west of Tysons (which can be very congested) and also on Route 7 through Seven Corners (no fun).

Depending on the location, Crowell/Browns Mill Roads and/or Old Courthouse are alternatives to much of Route 7 west of Tysons, though you'd still end up on Route 7 at some point. In addition, you can get on Route 29/Lee Highway off Route 7 heading towards DC. Doing so allows you to avoid the traffic bottleneck at Seven Corners.

So, for example, from Shouse Village/Wolf Trap:

Trap to Old Courthouse
Old Courthouse to Gosnell
Gosnell to Chain Bridge
Chain Bridge to Leesburg Pike/Route 7
Leesburg Pike/Route 7 to Lee Highway/Route 29
Lee Highway/Route 29 to Roosevelt Bridge (can get jammed up near Court House/Rosslyn, but so too can 66, 50, etc.)

Avoid seven corners like the plague. Take 123 to GW Parkway.
