That's one of the things I hated about apt. living - it's their schedule as to a/c and heat.

I turned it on for a bit Saturday morning to chase the damp chill out of the air. If it had been sunshine, I wouldn't have.

Wow, I like it cool in the house but I think my wife would leave me for the winter if I tried keeping it at 60 or under! She keeps it at 70 and we have had it on already - I adjust it to 68 but rarely any lower than that. She grew up in the Mediterranean so I'll blame her cold intolerance on that :-)

That's the way it always has been, but in our current apartment, we can turn on heat or a/c on our schedule.

We're turning it on intermittently. The weather lately has been so all over the place, and in older three-level houses like ours, heating the main level to a warm temp will make the upper level too toasty. (In the summer, a comfortable temp on the main floor means the basement will be freezing.) I think we have it set to 67 right now, but it has to be around 70 here in the basement. (No idea where those temperature sensors are.)

A couple of times we turned it on for a little bit to get the chill gone. That was when it was in the 40s outside I think...

Cool Gas-Paks and Ceiling Fans are the most efficient way to go.

We have a gas-pak, and we still have it set on "cool". For the uninitiated, a "gas-pak" is an electric heat pump that includes a gas-powered furnace within the box that sits outside on a concrete slab. So the heat pump part heats and cools electrically (which works fine in climates farther south and warmer than the DC area), but the gas-pak part kicks on to provide additional heat when it gets too cold for the heat pump to warm the house sufficiently by itself.

And of course, we have ceiling fans all over the house, running year-round to circulate the air and equalize temperatures from floor to ceiling.

Although our gas-pak is still set to "cool" at the moment, we keep a small oil-filled space heater in our bedroom for nighttime use if it gets too cold. Haven't had to turn the gas-pak to "heat" yet this fall, but might have to do so in another couple of weeks.

And in the spring, we probably won't turn the gas-pak back to "cool" until it gets pretty warm.
