Default Need info on Charlottesville, VA

Im considering moving to Charlottesville, VA. Im not real familiar with it and am trying to find out things like housing, apts, jobs, local newspapers, daycares, local dentists, etc. Ive found the govt facts and fell in love with the small city. Im a new registered dental assistant and do plan to continue my education and become a dentist. I havent found any job postings whatsoever and of course we all have to work. If anyone has any kind of information please contact me at curcilla99@yahoo.com[/email] or post it here thank you

I visited Charlottesville briefly and would also like more information. My impression was that the quaint little town revolves around the university there. I would be afraid of the lack of jobs, but I guess everybody needs dentists (and assistants like you).

Is there any life or opportunity in Charlottesville besides U.Va related things? My wife will have finished law school before we move and I prefer sales or business related administrative work (accounting, HR, etc.) ...and if I'm lucky, I might be going to U.Va.

Charlottesville is a nice place. I have lived there for a couple of years. Finding a job as a dental assistant shouldn't be that difficult. Just get you a copy of the Sunday daily progress. Housing is not too expensive either and there are plenty of complexex in the area. But i guess all most of the dentists' offices are located along route 29....that's perhaps where you would wanna live. It's a lot of fun in the summers though.

Charlottesville is a nice city, it is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the country. Charlottesville's unemployment rate (around 2%) is usually one of the lowest in the country as well. Housing is on the expensive side for Virginia, nearby towns: Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg are a good deal cheaper. UVa is a major employer in the area, but there are other large employers SNL Financial, State Farm Insurance, and the National Ground Intelligence Center.

Default For job opportunities

I live and work in C-ville. For job opportunities, just a few resources:

Employment

The HooK - Charlottesville's weekly newspaper, news magazine (classifieds)

DailyProgress.com | Charlottesville Va News, Classified & Lifestyle (classifieds)

These are good places to start. Also, it's a sophisticated town, but small enough where you could just pick up the phone and call all the dentist offices in 1-2 days and see if they're hiring. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions: Charlottesville Real Estate - Charlottesville Real Estate Agent

Technically Charlottesville isn't considered part of the Northern Virginia/DC metro... although the way things are going that might be change in another ten years. lol

You might get even better answers on the general Virginia forum.

Default Charlottesville

I have to disagree with anyone who says there is a good job market in Charlottesville. I have lived here ten years and it is abysmal. The University is the only real game in town, and does not treat its people well.

Also, don't let that 2% number mislead you - there are so many people here UNDERemployed - Ph.D.'s doing scut work, etc...

It is a beautiful place to live but a horrible place to work

I lived in Charlottesville for 10 years.
A really great and honest dentist is Dr. Tom Starkey.
I was considering driving down from NoVa to continue seeing him as my dentist until I found one up here.

curcilla, we just moved from the Charlottesville area to Fairfax. Charlottesville is a nice town, just not my kind of living. I know the people that live there love it. For daycare, my daughter attended 'Bright Beginnings' and it was awesome. She attended the Crozet location, but they have locations in Charlottesville as well.
