I saw this thread in the DC forum: what streets/zip codes to avoid in Alecxandria??

It's a few years old so I thought I'd post a thread over here. I'll be moving to the area soon.

Thoughts on zip codes in Alexandria?

By the way, here is a good zip code if you every need one: Zip Code Finder and Boundary Map.

Arlandria on the northern border (zip 23205), and certain parts of the Richmond Highway (Route 1) area to the south, have considerable poverty, including illegal immigrants. Culmore apartments (beyond Baileys Crossroads, zip 22041) is completely Hispanic. That said, I feel that violent crime is quite rare anywhere in greater Alexandria.

Definitely avoid the Hybla Valley/Pole Road area in South Alexandria.

Hybla Valley is a busy commercial area. Pretty safe. Some of the neighborhoods off of the side streets like along Lockheed Blvd. and Buckman Rd. I wouldn't walk along at night. But anywhere along Richmond Highway is plenty safe. This is in Fairfax Co. In the city of Alex. I would avoid the areas around the housing projects on Patrick and Henry Streets. There used to be alot of drug activity on E. Reed Ave. But that's been cleaned up. Overall Alexandria is a pretty safe town.

It really depends on who you are - if you are a family with children then you have to consider schools. If you are a single female, then you probably care a lot about safety and feeling safe at night. So what are you looking for? The truth is that there are nice enclaves even in the Hybla area - streets with million+ dollar homes on them, but the owners just do private school. It just depends on what your needs are.

There is no where inside the beltway in Virginia I'd be afraid of living in or would classify as truly unsafe. Some areas are definitely heavy on the immigrants, which will be obvious just by driving through them. Again these areas aren't really dangerous as even the spanish gangs aren't known for bothering other people.

Assault and robbery are very low in Alexandria, murders are near zero. The worst thing you could expect to realistically deal with would be auto theft.

More than half of "Alexandria" is outside the beltway. Anything east of 95 and north of Lorton is "Alexandria" which I personally think includes some of the sketchiest neighborhoods in nova. The Pole Road area is one of the few places in nova I would never live in.

And if the OP has to consider schools, then I would most definitely avoid that area.

Single 37 year old male with no kids. I can handle myself physically but I don't want to have to deal with places that have armed robberies every other day or week.

I was looking at apartments in the 22304 and 22311 areas.
