I will be starting a new job (same company) in Reston, VA off Freedom Dr in March/April and I was wondering where should I look to live where I can get the most for my money and still have a commute under 45 minutes? I currently live in Rock Hill, SC and I go to Charlotte, NC on a regular basis so a 45 minute drive isn't something that I can't handle. My hours would be 8:30-4:15 but I wouldn't have to go to the office every day or morning either. I don't mind leaving early for work as well.

I would also like to be in an area that is in good location to DC (same distance would be nice).

I am 32 years old with a wife and 3 kids so nightlife isn't my priority. I would probably look to rent for a year or 2 to get myself acclimated with the area and I would be looking at $3,000 or less per month.

I have been looking at places but I don't really know the area at all, except for the 1 or 2 times that I was up there per year prior.

Look into Centreville or Sterling. Good areas with good neighborhoods, decent schools and should be able to find something within your budget.

Reston itself you could likely find something if you're down with townhomes.

Centreville isn't a terrible commute? How is Chantilly?

Lots of rental sin your price range in Reston that would give you a very short commute and lots of time with the kids.

There are detached homes in your price range for rent but they go quickly - keep you eye out for them. Here are a few options that are on the market now that I recommend for you to consider.

1805 CRANBERRY LN, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX8525437 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com
2540 BRENTON POINT DR, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX8531340 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com
11127 LAKE CHAPEL LN, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX8530571 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com
11008 THRUSH RIDGE RD, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX9005032 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com
2156 GREENKEEPERS CT, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX8470684 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com

Look around Herndon/Sterling/Reston first. That will give you a short commute and you would be about 45 minutes from downtown DC. There is also a subway station in Reston to take you downtown.

Centreville and Chantilly aren't bad areas either but neither are near metro and both are very congested 24/7 (Route 28, 50, and 66 are nightmares in all directions most of the time).

OP with your budget, I'd look at renting a townhome right in Reston. The extra you pay for location will be worth it not spending time on the road.

Here's an idea of the type of place you could get into...

RESTON TOWNHOME FOR RENT

I would recommend neighborhoods off the Fairfax County Parkway. Good schools and easy commute to Reston. Parts of 20171 and 22033.
