Hello,

My sister is considering on moving per relocation for a job and I was wondering about the area in Northern Virginia.

Let me give some background as my sister and I both come from a traditional Nigerian family that have lived primarily in Miami, Florida throughout our lives and since she will be moving on her own I was wondering if there is any cities or neighborhoods that anyone would recommend that is:

1. Safe (as she will be on her own)
2. Diverse, diverse, diverse (we grew up primarily in diverse neighborhoods and she would love to continue that)

That is really all as she wants to move into a safe and diverse neighborhood as she will be on her own at the time. Also, if possible if its at least an hour commute from a city called Winchester (I believe).
Any help would be absolutely perfect to give as I mentioned this is her first move anywhere else and our family want to make sure she will be in a safe environment when she moves.

Also the prices when it comes to any single family homes/apartments/condos/townhouses that are in the area as it will be a big deal considering her move there.

Thank you for any of the responses that anybody might answer.

Winchester is on the far outskirts of Northern Virginia. It is normally considered part of the "country" and past what is considered suburban or even ex-urban. Winchester is an extremely safe area. That being said, it isn't as diverse as the closer in areas. To keep it within an hour commute to Winchester, I's say Leesburg would be your best safe and somewhat diverse area. Please note, though, that diversity in NoVa normally consists of larger populations of East Asians, Indians, and those from the Middle East. Africans and African-Americans, while certainly present and most definitely welcome, do not really settle in NoVa in large numbers.

Winchester is pretty safe. I would say that Leesburg is the most diverse neighborhood (and safe) within an hour commute from Winchester. Leesburg is considered a part of the DC suburb so home prices will be much higher than Winchester. What's your sister budget for housing?

The area near Skyline in Fairfax County seems to have a pretty decent African population, enough to support a shopping center. It's mostly Ethiopian though. West End Alexandria is another spot with an African presence.

I wonder what happened with your sister's move? Did she find an area that she likes?
