Well, my neighborhood always seems to luck out. A good 6 inches but the streets were plowed when I woke up. And, it's not our HOA that plows our streets, it's VDOT. I think it helps that a Pentagon express bus goes through our neighborhood.

We were plowed at 6am and he's been back a few times. I guess our HOA is on top of it.

Thanks. I've looked at that a few times this morning. I don't know how helpful it is. At one point I look and it shows our neighborhood as "in progress", but other streets aren't showing any color. Then I check back and our streets show no color matching the legend, but other streets are shown as "in progress".

My experience tells me "in progress" could mean 2 days and maybe not at all.

According to Dominion Power, there were about 50 homes without power in all of Fairfax County at midnight last night; that was my neighborhood. Thankfully, it came back around 8:30 this morning. Apparently there was some sort of underground cable failure -- Dominion had six trucks doing a lot of work in front of my neighbor's house when I was clearing the driveway this morning. I think we got maybe -- just maybe -- 4 inches of dry, powdery stuff ...

A couple people died there on Sunday hiking to the peak. Rescue crews couldn't get up the mountain until the next day as the winds were over 100mph. Conditions change rapidly but the ridgelines on that mountain is not a place in the winter to hangout.

Good amount of snowfall overnight after all. Plows started appearing through the night and I was able to get in front of them and roll my window down and point out which roads were still covered. I only hit one other trash can that someone left out stupidly, and also one of those orange construction barrels, but traction was much better once the plows moved through.

This morning I paid some of the neighborhood boys to clear off our driveway.

I've hiked up Mt. Washington, and there are multiple, very ominous signs warning you that the weather can change quickly. I still recall the wording of one, from 18 years ago: "Many have lost their lives--even in the summer." When I hiked up it in August or September, the sky was clear but the wind was about 50-60 mph.

A woman hiker from NYC died there a few nights ago. She purposely went hiking in those temperatures with 100 MPH winds. Alone. Her husband had dropped her off at 5am. She set off her emergency locater device but rescuers couldn't find her due to blinding snow and high winds.

An experienced hiker, just like experienced drivers--they still need to use common sense.

I've read numerous hiker accounts of those thru hiking the AT. The stories of the White Mountains are always interesting and sometimes nerve wracking. I love Mt. Washington but have only done it by car.
