My friend who has one is a male (former Jeep Wrangler driver) and says it's ridiculous. He has endured a lot of "road rage" from males in large pickup trucks who seem to take issue with the car. They purposely tailgate him and sneer. It's just weird as I have been in the car and witnessed it myself.
I wouldn't be surprised if motorcyclists, whose vehicles are even more minimalist, also face this problem.

It is strange, though, given that barrelling down the freeway in/on a tiny vehicle at 80+mph alongside, say, an 18-wheeler, isn't exactly for the faint of heart. Maybe the 'macho' types encased in their big, safe, gas-guzzlers sense this and it kinda bugs them a little? Who knows.

Contrary to what has been stated above, the car has as much "pickup/acceleration" as my Hyundai Elantra or my friend's Corrolla. I have also been in the Smart many times in the HOV lanes as he has driven it easily at 80mph so it's not a "speed" issue as my friend in the Smart drives rather aggressively.
The Elantra's nice—I had one as a loaner awhile back, while my vehicle was getting repairs done. I just wish I could find one as inexpensive as the Smart. Most used cars I've come across that are that inexpensive have a gazillion miles on them, making them not the wisest purchase.

I think some people are just wigged out by new things that are contrary to their whole identity!!

That said, I still don't care for the car but I hate when people bash something that they really don't know much about.
Yeah, I think at this point any Smart-driver reading this thread is probably disinclined to chime in only to get grief for it. There's actually a forum I came across just for Smart drivers; I'll probably peruse that and see what I find out regarding driving in ice/snow conditions.

I don't know about the SmartCar, but if you want it to have a chance in being able to get around in snow, whatever car you choose should definitely be front wheel drive.

If you know anything about physics small cars are dangerous. Notice the smart car at the end of the video, it just gets thrown aside like a rag doll, not smart. Imagine an suv or bus.
