If you want a larger, newer home with 3000 square feet, then welcome to Winchester VA, Charles Town WV, or (maybe) Frederick MD.

If a smaller 60s/70s SFH meets your needs then consider Leesburg around the historic town center.

Ashburn is very doable if you get a TH but that is the "rows upon rows of townhouses" -- but the best schools in Loudoun County.

As for Frederick only do that if (1) you want a bigger and newer SFH/fall in love with downtown Frederick and (2) your husband can work 7-3 or the such. That way you avoid paying the Australians (taking the Dulle$ Greenway) or getting stuck for 3 miles on Route 15 north of White's Ferry. If looking in Frederick City, keep your budget under 400k to compensate for the higher taxes, but that gets you a SFH in a nice area like Whittier, Dearbought, etc.

This information is so helpful! Thank you everyone!

How is the noise in Ashburn? Do you hear traffic all the time? Forgive me if that's a dumb question...I haven't visited the area yet, so with traffic as bad as I hear, I envision it as always loud. Aside from that, if we can find something within our budget there, it makes sense to live where you work!

I just checked out Winchester online....that looks like a definite possibility.

Charles Town is also on our radar, though I've heard internet and cell reception is very spotty. I will be working from home and relying on technology, so that concerns me a little. Any Charles Town residents here? Or should I head to the WV forum for that?

Thanks again! I appreciate all the advice!

Ashburn is not noisy, but don't take it from me. I'm Hard-of-hearing. Living in Ashburn makes the most sense for you if I read your desires right.

Winchester is a great little city but commuting on Route 7 looks easier than it is. What looks like a big hill can turn into a snowy, icy, foggy mess in a heartbeat. When there is an accident, there are very, very few alternative routes and they take you miles and miles around.

Ok, here is the story. I live in Ashburn, and would not live anywhere else. I have been here since 1996, and love it. The "town" of Ashburn consists of four major planned communities: Ashburn Village, Ashburn Farm, Broadlands and Brambleton, and a dozen other smaller subdivisions that make up the 20147 and 20146 zip codes. Ashburn's population is around 70,000. The Loudoun County Public School system is fantastic. I live in Ashburn Farm, and my daughters attended Sanders Corner Elementary and Stone Bridge High School. Unlike some other NOVA communities, we do not have a gang problem, and the streets are safe. No reason for your husband to commute because Ashburn is perfect. Go west on Route 7 towards Leesburg and get off at Claiborne Parkway. A drive along Claiborne will give you a feel for Ashburn.
