Looking for info on this area, expecially in the vicinity of Fayette St North. There is a building with a townhome in it for sale that we may be interested in. Coming as we are from out of state, the real scoop from locals has proven to be very helpful. Is this a safe area. Can a woman walk a dog in the area after dark? The area has the 22314 zip code, but is it really Old Town. Any info would be appreciated. Is this considered the west end? In another post, someone said that parts of the west end of Alexandria can be dicey. Please advise. Thanks

Hello,

Alexandria is general is a very nice, but pricey area. The area around Braddock Metro is really nice - there is a mix of residential and office buildings that make the area attractive and same. It is just a few blocks from King St which is the main hub old of 'Old Town'. Yes, a woman can walk a dog after dark. The 'dicer' areas you were warned about are a bit north from there and closer to Rt. 1. In general, the closer you are to downtown or towards the water, the safer it is.

If you have any other questions you can PM. Welcome to the area!

that area isn't the west end. It is more or less old town. And from an actual resident the west end isn't dicey. Does it have crime yes? totally unsafe? no.

I would not consider that the safest area particularly up near the metro; muggings and robberies are pretty common. Alexandria's worst crime hot-spot is only a block or 2 away as they have 2 large public housing developments within a couple blocks. If you want more info do a search for Parker Grey. There is a good blog on that area. I looked at a few rowhomes in the area, but just didn't like the issues that were going on there and from what I can tell the city council could pretty much care less. I've lived and currently do live in some fairly undesirable areas, but I probably wouldn't live in that neighborhood.

As Alanboy said the west end isn't a bad area, though it does have a bad, undeserved rep.
