I am moving from the mid-west to VA in the coming months and was hoping to hear your advice on towns I should look at.

Are there any towns that are about a 45 minute drive to Chantilly that are also lower in price (low 200s) and "safe"??

I saw some reasonable houses in Manassas and that that might a good area to look at.

What do you expect to get for "low 200s"? SFH? Townhouse? Size?

You can get some pretty nice condos that are about 1600 sq feet in Haymarket for 230-250k. A lot of Manassas is kind of run down. I don't know of anywhere that you can get a SFH within 45 minutes of Chantilly.

Condo or town home is perfectly fine.

If you're in Fairfax County - you don't need to worry too much about safety. You can find condos in the low 200s, especially now because the market has really slowed. Condo fees will likely be in the $300s though and only a few include utilities. You could potentially buy low right now and maintain the condo as a rental property.

You have options for safe communities especially if you are ok with a 2 bedroom condo. The choices I would say to look into are Chantilly, Centreville, Aldie, Gainesville, Bristow, and Haymarket. The further out you go, the more bang you get for your buck. My husband works in Chantilly and we live in Gainesville and the commute is not bad at all. On most days he can be to work within 20 minutes. If it is during rush hour he avoids 66 and it takes about 45 minutes.

Here are some options
6821 HAMPTON BAY LN #341, GAINESVILLE, VA | MLS PW8725315 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com

7146 LITTLE THAMES DR #191, GAINESVILLE, VA | MLS PW9502111 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com

4123 DAWN VALLEY CT #71C, CHANTILLY, VA | MLS FX8766876 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com

11021 FOLKSIE CT #303, MANASSAS, VA | MLS PW8621801 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com

Good Luck on your move!
