I drove up from the Raleigh area of North Carolina to Philadelphia via US 29 and then I-81. It adds 11/2 hours to our trip from the onset, but it's much prettier and generally less traffic than I-95. We left Wednesday morning at 7 AM and did not hit any traffic traveling northbound. It was glorious! There were a few backups heading southbound, but they didn't look too bad.

On the way home, we left Sunday morning from Phila. also at 7 AM. There was a backup around I-66 but nothing too bad (maybe an extra 15-20 minutes). Then we saw that there were a couple more backups near New Market and Staunton, so we got off on some side road and went south on 380 (I think). It took us through Waynesburg. Very pretty drive! I-64 West was backed up, so we took Route 6 (and maybe some road 275? before we got to 6) over to US 29 S. From there it was smooth sailing all the way home. All in all, it was not too bad! And I definitely recommend it over I-95 which gives me high blood pressure. :-)

Hope all my C-D NoVA friends had a good Thanksgiving!

Drove from Ashburn to Rock Hill, SC to Charleston, SC to Ashburn... took 11 hours coming back when its a 7:45 drive straight... Would normally take 9 hours with my wife, 3 kids (6, 4, 2) and a dog. We had 2 vehicles which made it event better! Makes me want to get back south.. Or I was thinking if I just lived in Richmond... (95 going n from Richmond or S from DC is just horrible)
