...diverse. 'White' is distant 4th in the school. Anybody know anything about the quality of the schools and/or the school experience at McNair? 40% of the lunches are subsidized there, vs. 5% at Oak Hill, a few miles away. Seriously...what is up with the area? How do 'poor' people afford $400,000 homes? I'm not poor (I think) and I can't afford one!

Anybody have any comments about the McNair Farms area? We're almost certainly going to land there. It's tough to find a place (and feel good about it) when you're only in town for 1/2 days per visit, so this board is golden. Thanks again.

I don't have any personal knowledge of McNair, but a quick look at the online stats shows that McNair has lots of poor kids, many with limited English skills, and has repeatedly failed to meet its NCLB goals. One ironic consequence of this failure was that the school was required to offer its students transfers to better Fairfax county schools -- and most of those who jumped were the high-achievers rather than the struggling kids.
It's also one of the larger elementary schools, which is not usually a good thing.
I'd avoid it if possible, but keep in mind that if the test scores remain low, you might have the option to transfer...
