Hello. I am a high school English and journalism teacher in the northern Dallas suburbs, but would like to move soon. If anyone has any recommendations about great areas to teach and live in around Northern Virginia, I would appreciate your help. Loudoun County, Fairfax, and Arlington appeal to me, though I am open for suggestions on outlying areas. Thank you.

Northern Virginia has the worst traffic in the nation and since teachers don't work at large employment centers, you will probably have to drive to work. Northern Virginia is the 4th most expensive area to live in. The median family income in Fairfax is over $100k a year. As a teacher, you will be significantly below the median income (my wife taught in Fairfax County public schools for many years). You will either need a room mate or you will live outside an hour and 15 minute commute to an Arlington, Alexandria or inner Fairfax school on a teacher's salary. You may barely make it to Fairfax's South County or Hayfield HS in that time range. Loudoun and Prince William schools may be doable. Good luck.

Perhaps if you shared what you like about the area, we could help you more. Is there something you would like to be near?

How many years experience do you have? Are you single or moving with a family (dual incomes)?
