Tolls are Offically Coming to I-66 Inside the Beltway (2015, law)

As a Northern Virginian resident, I am not happy with this news and the overall plan. It would make sense to add tolls if 66 was going to expand to three lanes in each direction from the beltway to the DC line. Now, they will just add tolls during rush hours with no widening planned until 2023.

I just don't get why everything around here is so convoluted and difficult.

Did they expect PW, FFX and Loudoun to stay at 100,000 residents? It shouldn't be that difficult to create an environment where people can get from A to B without endless traffic, congestion etc. There are other places that have grown just as quickly as NoVa has and they didn't have this issue.

66 needs to be widened, that should definitely be a priority. By 2023 they're going to be too far behind and we will continue this cycle.

The problem is that there are too many cars and not enough highways. The local governments don't want to address that instead of extending route 28 into Maryland to join interstate 270 at some point or building an outer beltway, they want to toll everything.

The main reason for this change is to catch and collect from the HOV violators. VDOTs own data shows around 40% of cars on I-66 inside the beltway in VA are violating the HOV rules during rush hour. That's THOUSANDS of cars every day. A good chunk of them exit by Ballston, but the point remains.

With automatic EZ pass readers these cars either pay the toll or get sent a fine in the mail. I can't say I agree with a toll for the reverse commute though (this isn't totally clear in the article).

The question is how many cars will pay to use the lanes or instead choose to use other local free roads? How many solo drivers not violating the HOV will move to I-66 if they can pay a toll to legally drive alone during rush hour? How "expanded" will the toll hours be and how will it affect people that use I66 alone outside the current rush hour? We will have to wait and see,

UGH, I just wish this would take effect this week...

I have to be near the Verizon Center all next week, all day long, every day.

I would LOVE to be able to pay extra to be able to use 66.

The Governor dropped that part of the plan so the tolls now are only for peak direction (east in morning, west in evening).

HOV-3. I think what get lost in the confusion though is that current Virginia Law is that all highway HOV/HOT Lanes (not including Dulles Toll Road) have to be HOV-3 by 2020. Doesn't necessarily have anything to do with this proposal.

Funny thing is, some of those violators aren't actually violating the law, but rather using Dulles Airport, which is allowed for 66.
