Over 2500 signatories of the Arlington petition now.
If you consider yourself a reasonable person open to facts, then you must look at what the facts are. We're all against violence committed using guns (or otherwise). The question is, do gun stores really increase violence nearby?

Look at where the gun stores actually are. You don't have to go far. There is one in Falls Church and a couple in Fairfax County. Is there more "gun violence" near those stores? There is not.

I don't even own a gun, and I voted for Obama. I'm actually for increased regulation of gun sales--namely, more in-depth background checks and requiring them for sales between individuals as well. But the opposition to gun stores is not based on reality. It is very much like opposing pharmacies because you're against the abuse and illegal sale of prescription opioids (which is at epidemic proportions, by the way).

I live in Arlington, as do my family members--one of whom lives VERY close to there. I drive through that area all the time.

We're all for the gun store.

Well said.

Logical and rational.

Unfortunately, just like in the other thread, this will fall on deaf ears.

Reading between the lines, the local government in Arlington is telling residents that its hands are tied under Virginia law when it comes to reviewing the gun store's application, while also encouraging residents to contact the landlord directly to express their concerns (and, presumably, suggest they will boycott all the businesses in his building). That is what led the Arlington landlord in Cherrydale to cancel a lease with the owner of the store now in McLean.

Gun Retail on Pershing - County Board

I'd assume the County Board would not issue a statement like this unless they thought it reflected the preferences of most Arlington voters.

Hell of an assumption, I think.

Likely a result of some complaints of inaction, and a statement explaining what they can and can't do; and then what you can do.

Not at all. A county board doesn't take pains to let people know how citizens mobilizing privately previously convinced a landlord to renege on a lease with a gun shop unless it's encouraging them to follow suit.

Clearly, they don't want the store there ("We share your concerns about the nature of the product to be sold at the store" and "We encourage you to share your concerns with both the owner of the complex and the tenant") but cannot stop it without additional, delegated authority from the Virginia legislature.

Try to read more closely next time.

The statement you posted is not from the entire County government but from one elected official--the chair of the County Board, Libby Garvey. Try to read more closely next time.

I really dont care about this thing -- America is the wild west to most of the western world unfortunately (cant tell you how many Europeans have asked me if their life was at risk visiting) but Libby Garvey is about as right wing as the County Government gets so I would definitely say she's speaking for the entire board or at least a majority.

Absurd statement. America didn't have the Holocaust, Stalin's purges, Mao's murders, the Bosnia/Kosovo mess, or the other incredible mass murders Europe and other nations have. So for those people to critique us is really quite absurd. Do you have any credible evidence that a gun store poses a danger to a daycare nearby? Do you think some kid is going to go in and buy a gun while at the daycare?
