Hello! I recently started a new job in Tysons. And you guessed it, my schedule is 8-5. I live in Manassas. I have been taking 66 to 495 but am wondering if anyone knows of any alternative routes? I will try ANYTHING! I was thinking Clifton to 29? Not sure how 29 is at those times? I am on the Prince William Parkway side of Manassas. My GPS has told me to go 95 to 495 but I heard 495 is a nightmare so I haven't tried that YET! Any suggestions?? I am convinced there are routes to take that will have traffic but will be moving, that is all I am asking for... HELP!

The only shortcut really is cutting through Clifton and Burke to get to 495 in the mixing bowl, however, that wouldn't help you because then you would have to sit in traffic on 495.

You don't want to be on local streets in Old Town Fairfax during rush hour. 29, 50, and 123 are all parking lots. You could try Braddock Road but again you will get stuck in traffic on 495 unless you're willing to pay the toll for HOT lanes.

Thanks! Do you think if I were to change my schedule from 8-5 to 7:30-4:30 it would make any difference? I am hoping you will say yes.. haha

495 has express lanes so you could pay to use those and save some time. It's not going to be a pleasant commute no matter what you do

I did take 495 South Express Lanes coming home but that was easily $10 because I took it to Braddock! Don't really want to spend that every day.. but I will if for some reason I want to get home urgently!

Haha! Husband and I just bought a brand new home, right before me taking this job. Don't want to move. Plus, we get a lot more for our money where we live as opposed to living closer in to the city. 66 isn't that bad. I make it to work in a little over an hour.. just thought I would ask around for alternative routes..

My prior job was in Arlington so I am in no way against the distance/commute.. just asking for any input on alternative routes.

Not really. You need to change your start time to at least 630 to have a noticeable impact. I've seen a study that found that 730-800 is the absolute busiest time of the morning on the highway during rush hour.

So then if I have to be at work at 7:30 I would leave my house around 6:30.. you said above that the highways are the busiest from 7:30-8.. I would already be at work at that time.

Manassas to Tysons is a crappy commute, especially if you're not taking toll roads. There aren't any magical secret routes that will shave off a ton of time, if that's what you're hoping for. The earlier you leave the better though. Leaving your house at 6:30 would likely help a lot. I've never understand why people would prefer leaving at the buttcrack of dawn to have a bigger house, rather than having a smaller house and getting to leave at a normal time and getting to do things like have breakfast w your kids. But to each their own
