I live in Maryland but I also like Northern Virginia because of its housing options. However, one reason I hesitate to move from Maryland is because it has UMCP and its excellent engineering and computer science programs. Of course, Virginia has excellent universities too but the best ones are not in the DC area.

Has this crossed your mind in your decision to live in Northern Virginia?

Yes. MD was where I wanted to be and send my kids to UMCP. However, the kids didn't want to go there. We moved to NoVA and two kids now go to VT and UVA.

Are you asking because you, yourself, want to attend a university, or because you think your children will care how close the university they choose is to you?

George Mason seems to have increased in stature in recent years.

No. As a resident on the Orange/Silver line in Arlington, I am just selfish enough to say I don't want any more drunk people yelling and carrying on in the streets in my neighborhood.

I grew up about a 30 minute drive from UMCP and, because it was so close, I was adamant that I did not want to go there! Stupid me, it is a great school. I live in VA now and I am not bothered that we don't have a UMCP in our backyard.

It's for my children. They are more than a decade away from going to college. However, I'm the kind of person who likes to think about these things well in advance.

College costs these days are no joke. So, I'm wondering how people with children who live in NOVA go about assessing their options.

We have them apply to all the Virginia schools and they either get in or they don't. I guess I'm wondering exactly what your concern is? Is it that you want your kids at a big engineering/football school but also want them to be very close to you?

I believe that a good University/campus does increase property values?
