Washington, D.C., authorities warned Wednesday that the transit system in the nation's capital is in such bad shape that it might be necessary to shut down entire lines for as long as six months to do repairs. Up to now, workers have made fixes during short shutdowns over nights and weekends.

5 things you need to know now - D.C. Metro could suspend rail service for up to 6 months

I have been pounding on this issue for over a year now. It wouldn't shock me if they shut it down for one full year. WMATA has gotten nearly $5 billion from local and federal tax dollars and have done nothing to improved the subway system. They need to get rid of unions, and overhaul the entire staff including some management at the top.

Is that even possible? I know we managed ok during that one day shutdown because so many people worked from home or just took the day off, but I feel like a 6 month shutdown would bring this region to it's knees

That's certainly what the Post is reporting. They will pick certain lines and do long-term shut downs.

This was an eventuality and probably what caused there to be no head of Metro for so long. Weidefeld walked into a s#!tshow and is taking the punches for it. Metro has been mismanaged due to a whole variety of internal and external reasons for a long time. It's a shame that it had to come to such drastic action to get the system back in shape. Hopefully this will get the region's governments to truly realize how essential Metro is and get them behind giving them the necessary funding without adding on their own agendas.

Just imagine what would happen to I-66, Toll road.....

I hope OPM also gives 6 months telecommute option to Fed staff so traffic wouldn't be too bad.

Maybe people will realize that buying a certain lifestyle outside the beltway is not really worth the hype, large ego, and consider living in a smaller space, with less, a smaller commute, and more time with your family.
