I don't understand how VDOT can claim that they didn't know - how is it that those of us that listened to the weather reports (I heard 4, 5 and 9) and there was a prediction of sleet/freezing rain (worse to the North/West as usual) - and VDOT claims they didn't think we were getting anything. I knew enough to go out and vote earlier in the day and run my errands, etc. before anything started - how could they NOT know?

It took me 1.5 hours to get home when it usually takes 20 minutes on Route 1. Bumper to bumper. No email warning, hadn't heard anything on the radio about how severe this mess was, and while an ambulance had to weave through the traffic, I did not see an accident before my exit.

The problem was elevated ramps and passes freezing far earlier than other sections of road. As soon as one car spins out, you have domino effect gridlock.

Why was traffic so bad on Feb 12?

Well, thats a no-brainer: it was a primary election day in DC, MD, and VA, with huge voter turnout.
