What Rocks Your House?
I have lived in Lake Ridge and mid-county. Periodically, there are nice "booms" and some are strong enough to rock the house and send a chandelier in motion. Earlier this week, I was in Lake Ridge, and all during the day we had the mother of all booming days.
I never have called the non-emergency number for the police....for some reason, it's a call that I fear they will send someone out to listen to the "booms" and then the booms won't happen. (aka, crazy lady whacked syndrome) We have speculated it was Quantico, but never have seen this addressed in the local papers.
Has anyone 1) felt or heard these booms, or 2) checked out the source?
TIA,
SM

When I lived in my previous house, a large new subdivision was being built nearby. The developers started pile-driving to compact the soil, which caused reverberations along with loud noise in our neighborhood. A group of our neighbors complained to the county -- not about the noise as much about the fact that this could damage our foundations. Fairfax County got the developers to stop and to use an alternate method (don't remember what) to avoid any damage to our neighborhood.

I think it's probably coming from Quantico also - there were some newspaper articles awhile back explaining and how neighbors were complaining, etc.

Now a year later (I see).... after being woken up...YET AGAIN, by the constant booming noise that shakes my house..even the rafters cracked after one loud blast. Annoyed, I did a quick search and found this post. I forgot about Quantico being so close and kind of assumed it was some sort of rock blasting. If its that far away and shakes my house so much so that the rafters crack or the house feels like its being jar'd...thats ridiculous!!

Yeah I agree it's probably Quantico. I used to live in Triangle and my windows would shake sometimes

Definitely Quantico. Somewhere they sometimes announce when they are going to do this - you might try searching their website - or sometimes I've heard about it on WTOP.

Hi, Thanks!! Yeah, its been going on ALL day and is really annoying. I was going to search Quantico's site next. Being military I'm used to hearing bombs go off (testing), but the continued reverberation, cracking of the house, sounds like someone pounding on the outside of the house etc. is getting annoying FAST!! I stepped outside and you can definitely hear it.. sounds like deep loud thunder in the direction of Quantico. I need to find, as you said, when they plan to do this.. not like it matters.. haha, but at least I'll know how many hours they plan to do this. Ugh! Must be some pretty powerful bombs (or whatever it is they're doing) to shake my house so far away. (p.s. they did finally stop a few hours this morning and I was able to go back to sleep but now its started again)

How far is Lake Ridge from Fort Belvoir? I know they were doing some major blasting down there, getting ready for BRAC.
