It actually ends up pretty even for Verizon vs. DirecTV basic packages with 2 DVRs

DirecTV is 78 a month according to their website.
Verizon is 80 a month: 48 for basic plus 16 for each DVR.

But the biggest problem is the equipment. Verizon makes you buy the equipment where Direct TV will rent them to you.

Apologies, I didn't read the previous responses. We had Dish Network (satellite) and I loved it. It would go out occasionally, briefly in storms. Also, we started having problems and were told that our trees were getting so tall that eventually we'd have to switch to Direct TV (we lived in a forested area). But basically I loved the channels and I loved the way I could push a button, and find the name of the show, the summary, the year made and the actors. I really, really miss that - the hoa here apparently doesn't allow satellite tv, but my neighbor in the back has a dish so who knows. My parents have Direct TV in a different state and I can't make heads or tails of how the remote works, etc. I know that sounds petty, but for a tv addict like myself, I loved the "presentation" of channels and options.

I don't believe that an HOA can legally not allow for a homeowner to have a dish. They can request it be in a certain place, but that is it. They can only request, you can put it where you get the best reception. I was on an HOA board when the law was passed.

Good to know - I didn't pursue it because the local company offers a cable-internet-phone package and it was inexpensive and convenient (nice to get just one bill). I thought I heard that someone appealed the HOA a few years back on a case-by-case basis or *something* - but I'm in another state now, who knows ... now that I think about it, I would do anything to have that satellite remote control in my hot little hands right now flipping away at my 500 channels - Law and Order 24/7!!

FCC Fact Sheet on Placement of Antennas In case anyone is interested, this has some good info regarding what applies re:HOAs

We are thinking of switching from DirecTV to Comcast cable/phone/internet. We already have phone and internet through them. I really only had satellite so that I could get the MLB package. Cable now carries it.

I just got Verizon FiOS and I didn't have to buy any equipment. They rent it out just like Comcast, Cox, or any other cable company.

Like I said early on in this thread, I had Comcast and HATED it. I was so happy to get back to Directv.
