How bad will traffic to Northern Neck be for July 4th weekend? One camper is planning to leave 3:30pm Friday from Fairfax, and the other Saturday mid morning. Will traffic be anything like normal 95 traffic? Any tips on which way to go? I have no experience with this part of the state.

I assume you know that traffic on I-95 down to Fredericksburg will be miserable on Friday afternoon. It will be heavy by mid-morning on Saturday, although not as bad as the preceding day.

Of course, the alternative is taking U.S. Route 301 through southern Maryland and over the Nice Bridge into King George County, but that can be just as bad -- if not worse -- on the eve of a summer holiday weekend.

In Fredericksburg you'll connect with Route 3, which is the main artery through the Northern Neck. It's a four-lane divided highway between Fredericksburg and U.S. Route 301, and mostly a two-lane highway east of there. I've driven along Route 3 over holiday weekends in the past. I remember encountering some traffic signal congestion near U.S. Route 301, but nothing paralyzing. Most of the traffic along that segment of Route 3 is bound for local destinations.

You all sure pick the WORST times to travel! Friday rush hour before a holiday weekend and the usual Saturday morning summer getaway traffic. Both of you should leave at 5:30 AM on Saturday morning. I know you probably won't so I think that your traffic in I95 up through Fredericksburg is going to be slow going.

UPDATE: The first car left from McLean at 12:45 with an expected arrival time (via Waze) of 2:45. Traffic kept building, and ultimately, the drive took 3 hours arriving at Westmoreland State Park at 3:45.

The second car left Fairfax at 9am and arrived at 11:30am meaning a 2.5 hour drive. Both cars took the route through Maryland rather than 95. The main sticky points were through Maryland including the toll and bridge. Once over the bridge, it was clear sailing.

The drive back leaving at 10:20am took 1 hour 45 minutes without any traffic to speak of.
