After years and years of sprint (cingular and att before that), i'm considering going to a lower cost carrier like boost, cricket, etc. yes, i know they're owned by a major carrier like verizon, sprint, and so on.

But does anyone here have any feedback to share about the overall quality of the calls and internet speed? As in, can you hear clearly and sound clear to the person on the other end of the phone call? how is it compared to one of the major carriers?

Which would you recommend?

Thanks.

I have had good luck with Republic wireless going on 3 years now. Cost is 1/3 of my wife's Verizon 2GB data plan.

Expect the same coverage as their parent company, sans roaming capability.

Last year I switched to Cricket and couldn't be happier! I live in Fairfax, used to work in Herndon, and now work in Springfield and have never had an issue with connection. (Though, I don't use the phone to actually make many calls - when I have - I haven't had any issues.) $35/mo ...simply cannot be beat in my opinion.

I got a Virgin plan over three years ago. Network is same as Sprint. No roaming but at $35/month for text/voice/3GB, it not bad at all. If you go over 3gb, there are a few different ways to get more data cheaply.
Like other no-contract plans, you need to buy your phone up front, but depending on what you get, the plan quickly pays for itself compared to other providers.
I had Verizon before so the coverage isn't as good but for the DC area, I'm never without coverage.

You will only have service within your provider's network only...in this area, it affect folks that are more rural and away from major roadways. You can research coverage area maps at the major cel providers...
