Yup, Route 1 is a virtual paradise when it comes to chain stores and restaurants. There's also a couple of Chinese restaurants I like on that stretch: Green Olive for cheap buffet-style and Peking Duck Restaurant for Peking Duck.

Thanks all, I guess I will just need to scout the area a bit more. The schools are what seem most troubling.

I had a friend that lived in Vantage until last fall because she bought a new home in Lorton. Her general opinion was that the neighborhood had gone downhill, but not in any extreme manner, just mostly in aesthetic qualities. West Potomac High School is a decent high school and has a mix of children from very wealthy families and less fortunate ones, but I think you'd probably find trouble with the elementary school that Vantage feeds into, as West Potomac's better elementary schools are on the other side of the district around Fort Hunt and Stratford, which are the very affluent areas. Good luck in your home search!

stoneybrooke is a diverse neighborhood that can hold its own (even if it is getting old) with a safe feeling to it and west potomac is a decent high school, diverse also with good teachers. The elementary school is good (Groveton), even if it gets a bad rap (unfairly so)
