Actually, one BBQ isn't in NC but is Shore Beef and Barbecue in Easton MD (I like to drop south via the Shore.) Their pulled pork sandwich hits the spot on a long road trip.

The BBQ joint not to be missed is Carrituck BBQ Co on Rt 158 in Barco NC. I've been there a couple times and never not seen a big line. It moves quickly though. Their Burnt End Brisket is to die for. They are also known for their sides, such as the Sweet Potato Casserole. Blackberry Cobbler is in season. If you pass by, don't wait until too late in the day. They often sell out of the good stuff. If you are on your way home, bring a cooler and load up.

we had Red, Hot, and Blue for a recent party, and it was very good. It travelled well, too. Leftovers were great....be warned..the hot is the real deal.

Willard's is my go to locally. It's a haul, but Monk's BBQ in Purcellville is delicious. Anyone been to Carolina Brothers in Ashburn?

He specifically asked for non-chain recommendations.

Love Carolina brothers. I used to go there about once a month when I had business in the area. It's Carolina style. I've always gotten the pulled pork sandwich, but I know they offer ribs too. I had forgotten about them. Their sides are good too. Plus, they have reasonable-sized desserts for a single person.

I'm from NC and you're simply not going to find good NC-style BBQ in the DC area. I do strongly recommend the new Oklahoma Joe's in Merrifield by the Dunn Loring metro. It's Kansas City-style and it's delicious, especially the burnt ends. OK JOE'S

I never liked willard's because the meat tastes like liquid smoke, plus there are no smokers outside which means they artificially add smoke flavor.
