As DullNBoring pointed out, people in NYC wear their ethnicities on their sleeves. I grew up in the SF Bay Area, another "melting pot", and where I come from they would also call it stereotyping because people are so sensitive about being "politically correct". Most New Yorkers are way past that because it's considered normal to identify yourself with one group or another. And unlike the rest of the country, people usually won't often be offended by the categorization. Quite the contrary - unless there are pejoratives being used. As we all know, New Yorkers are famous for being able to turn a cultural idiosyncrasy into an insult with a few choice words as well.
Personally, I find New Yorkers straightforwardness very refreshing and it's one of the reasons why I always love going there.
