Hello All,

Needing a sheet cake and was wondering if any of the moms on the site or anyone for that matter who bought a sheet cake from a grocery store that they would recommend. I need a sheet cake for birthday/mothers day and want a good tasting one. Suggestions?? I live in Ashburn so I was thinking Wegmans or Harris Teeter, not sure.

I like BJ's sheet cakes. They have the chocolate mousse filling and the whipped cream frosting that my family likes.

Wegman's is good and a decent price. Costco is also good.

I hate to be the lone dissenter, but I think Wegman's does a not-so-good job on custom made birthday cakes. Their other desserts (tarts, cream pies, lemon cake, etc,) are fantastic but we've been disappointed a few times on the special order birthday cakes (sheet and round). I tried to warn my neighbor who was ordering one for her daughter but she did it anyway and they were really disappointed. Honestly, I think Safeway makes a better birthday cake. I guess I (and a few others) don't like Wegman's birthday cake recipe.

Costco's cakes are okay and can be impressive looking but so many people have used them over the years, I find that people are tired of them.

I have heard that if you special order a sheet cake from any Giant that still has a bakery in the store, they are pretty good.

After that, I think you need to start looking at bakeries.

I like Harris Teeter...they do whipped cream frosting which I prefer to buttercream. Don't have a Wegman's close.

I agree with Christine. Wegman's cakes are not the best and I love Wegman's. Costco is the cheapest for a sheet cake, but they are not great anymore. We used to get them for the kids' birthday parties and have recently changed because there is too much cake leftover (no one eats it). The moistest sheet cakes we have found in grocery stores are Giant and Shopper's. Safeway is hit or miss depending on the particular store.

Giant - good and inexpensive. I usually get a fresh, premade cake from the bakery and then I add a few decorations at home to make it special. I usually ask the people in the bakery to do the writing on the cake and they've even piped on some simple decorations (like balloons).
