To summarize commuting on 66 is a nightmare. The HOV-2 lanes don't work because there's too much traffic and some hybrids are still allowed. Lots of people commute to Tyson's or Fairfax Hospital (or further into Arlington/DC if they are insane) from PWC. It's 30 minutes if you come in before 6am, but can be 60-90 minutes during rush hours. Heading west after 3pm can also be 90+ minutes - EVERY DAY.

By 2020 they will be converting to HOV-3, but exactly how is still under talks. I'd expect something similar to the beltway HOT lanes where the HOV lanes are physically separated.

Inside the beltway is supposed to be HOV only during rush depending on the direction, but a good 30+% of the cars on any given day are violators . These will likely be converted to HOT lanes as well.

What a mess, I remember when there was no Beltway, no Dulles, no Cabin John, no WW Bridge, 66 was two lanes, 1 traffic light in Tysons, Route 7 was a two lane road going west with no lights until Leesburg. I must be getting old

Yes, but think about how much better Northern Virginia is now that an hour commute each way is considered "normal", and you need $500,000 for a nice home.
