Thanks everyone!!!! Appreciate all your input. Very good information. In regards to residency...after i am established in va,we can switch and get in-state status for my son. Doesn't graduate until may 2017...i am thinking about finding work ahead of his graduation date..getting settled and then husband and family can join in the summer. Yes, i have been looking and arlington is outrageously expensive.

You have to live in Virginia a year, and show that you intend to stay long term, to change to in-state tuition after starting school. If you were a Virginia resident more than a year before they start school, and paid taxes, he can start school at in state rates. Make sure you filed a Virginia tax return and, strangely, registered your car at least a year before the term you want to be considered in state for tuition. We did change to in state rates one year after moving to Virginia. My daughter paid the out of state rate her first year in college. It was a pain, but we succeeded in being declared eligible for in state tuition for her final 3 years. Our other daughter had no issue since we were resident 2 years before she started school. One other thing, become a Virginia resident and register your car before August to make it work better.
