I'm originally from Houston and in my 2 years living in Arlington, I have noticed that all new home construction is Craftsman style. Anytime family from Houston visit, they immediately make that distinction. So what gives? Why are there so many Craftsman Style homes?

I'm just guessing, but because all of the new construction in Arlington is basically fill-in, the style is predominantly going to be something that feels older, even if it is brand new. A Craftsman style house is going to fit in better than a random large house that you see in a large subdivision in the outer burbs or elsewhere in the country.

Because they're trying to stay in character with the old neighborhoods, though it seems many are building Craftsman barns, judging by the size.

Arlington County has different areas of different housing types. There are sections of brick colonials (like Arlington Forest), there are areas of 1950s/1960s brick ramblers, split-levels, and split-foyers (like Military Rd/Yorktown area), and for much of Arlington, there are the 1920s/30s bungalows and Craftsman-style homes (with some true Craftsman houses). It's a popular style.

I would love some craftsman style houses in leesburg. Instead I'm stuck with vinyl wrapped, over gabled federal colonials. Meh.

Very true! It's like 10 home designs in Loudoun county over the past 15 years, repeated over and over and over again out here!

Seriously??

Maybe you need to get in the minivan and leave your planned cookie cutter neighborhood and look at the rest of Leesburg. You are going to see Colonial, Victorian, Classical Revival, Greek Revival, Federal and Georgian. Walk downtown. Drive through the country. Fantastic architecture abounds.

I love this graphic

My favorite house style is any of the 'Modern' architectures, front gabled. (I currently live in a side gabled ranch).

Seems like a majority of what I see around here are the McMansion, or Colonials (particularly the townhouses, or the facades of them).

Bunch of rebuilds in my neighborhood. Craftsman is way better than the McMansion style you would find in most of NOVA. Its almost impossible to differentiate Ashburn from South Riding or Gainesville in this respect. All the same crap.

I think craftsman is just one of the more popular styles now. A lot of the teardowns in Vienna are rebuilt with similar styling.
